Abstract

Pediatric pelvic trauma presents unique challenges due to the complex anatomy and potential for severe injuries to both bony and visceral structures. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of pediatric pelvic trauma, covering the anatomy of the pelvic region, including the bony pelvis and pelvic cavity, as well as the rectum, bladder, and uterus. Etiologies of pelvic trauma, such as blunt trauma and penetrating injuries, are discussed, highlighting the various classification systems employed to categorize pelvic fractures. Diagnostic modalities, including X-ray and CT imaging, are essential for accurate evaluation and classification of pelvic fractures. Treatment options, ranging from mechanical stabilization with pelvic binders to surgical interventions such as angioembolization and preperitoneal packing, are detailed, emphasizing the importance of prompt and appropriate management.

Injuries to pelvic viscera, including the rectum, bladder, and uterus, are explored in depth, with discussions on diagnostic techniques such as FAST, digital rectal examination, and cystography. Special consideration is given to patients of sexual abuse, with a focus on comprehensive care and support. Complications of pelvic fractures and pelvic visceral injuries, such as pelvic asymmetry, chronic pain, and growth deformities, are addressed, underscoring the importance of long-term follow-up and management. This chapter serves as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals involved in the care of pediatric patients with pelvic trauma, providing insights into the diagnosis, treatment, and management of these complex injuries.
